One thing you probably wonder when looking at trains is, ‘what do these numbers on this steam locomotive mean?’. For example, 4-8-4, what does it mean? These numbers specify the wheel arrangement on a steam locomotive. 4-8-4 means the locomotive has four wheels in the front, eight wheels in the center, and four wheels in the back. So, next time you see a steam locomotive, you’ll be able to have everyone saying, ‘What’s he talking about?’.

Something else you’re going to want to know about steam locomotive; are their names. For example; a locomotive with a 4-8-4 wheel arrangement, is also known as a ‘northern’ type. Streamlining
Anyone who like trains, probably know what streamlining is. But for those who don’t, streamlining was an experiment in the 1930s that revolutionized railroad passenger service. A school in Cleveland, OH was assinged to the job, and they rolled out the worlds first streamliner. The locomotive was a New York Central J1E 4-6-4 Hudson, the new, streamlined version was named Commodore Vanderbilt. Here’s a picture:
